Mononoke Hime is a story that takes place in Feudal Japan. It is a
world where people still believed in Shamanism and Animal Gods, who
protect the forests with fervor. Humans and nature lived in harmony,
until humans started to make iron. Ashitaka, a warrior of the east(?)
defeated a boar infected with some strange disease. He became
infected as well, and set out west to find a cure. Along the way, he
meets San (Mononoke Hime), a girl raised by Moro and the wolves in the
ancient forest. She and the Giant Animal Gods fight against the humans
in Irontown, a town where women are dominant, and the Lady Eboshi
Gozen, who fight with Chinese rifles. Lady Eboshi and her followers
hunt the "Shishi Gami" (Deer God), whose head is human on a deer body,
who is the giver/taker of life. Ashitaka, as he struggles to keep his
rage in check (a side effect of the disease), finds an ally in San,
and brings the humans in Irontown and the Animal Gods together, well,
in the end.
